摘要：Historical Development and Current Demands  of Institutional Research in China

Abstract： Institutional Research （ IR）, both as a new paradigm for research on higher education and an important administrative strategy in higher education institutions（ HEIs）, was introduced to China around 20 years ago and has undergone a rapid development since then. The ultimate goal of IR is to make higher education administration more rational and democratic. However, nowadays the pervasive tendency of bureaucracy in China＇ s higher education system has reduced, and even eliminated the demands for IR. It is therefore necessary to carry out a radical and profound reform in higher education system so as to vigorously promote the development of IR in China.
